In Maine, the people overturned a bill that the Governor had signed allowing same sex marriage. This cartoon depicts the citizen’s of Maine’s anger against this bill and their action of “ripping” same sex marriage out of law. This cartoon makes the people of Maine look harsh against this action and framing them as taking away the rights of gay people to marry freely.

These states were the first two to authorize gay marriage. This cartoon shows each states' support in allowing the natural freedom of being able to choose who they wish to marry. This natural right of being able to freely choose who to marry is depicted by the statue of liberty, which is a symbol of the freedoms we all enjoy as U.S. citizens.

Cupid is sitting between a two segregated water fountains. The “straight” water fountain is nicer and newer and cleaner in appearance and has the word marriage written on it. The “gay” water fountain is older and dirtier in appearance and has the words “civil union” on it. What “reality” is constructed/framed about sexual minorities and their rights?
The reality constructed in this cartoon is that segregation is bad no matter what time period or whether its between African Americans and Whites or gays and straights. The water fountains create an image that reminds the reader of segregation during the civil rights era and compares segregation against gays to that same time of injustice. The year 1952 at the bottom of the cartoon relates to the year that segregation in schools went on trial, which lasted to be a 30-year legal fight. The cartoon is suggesting that gay rights could possibly be the same thing and take many years to resolve another case of segregation, something that should have already been taken care of.

In this cartoon the author is not only framing gay marriage negatively, but also marriage in general negatively. This picture shows that while marriage is mainly viewed as a good thing, the “benefits” that come with marriage can also include struggles that aren’t always easy. This picture shows that this other side of marriage is something that gays don’t understand and should consider before entering into a marriage together.

This cartoon shows the intolerance of gay marriage that is often seen in Christian religions and is more a stab at religion than anything. This cartoon points out an extreme case of intolerance where someone who has nothing is thankful to prevent others from having freedoms and liberties over everything else. This cartoon favors gay marriage and empathizes with those whose rights are trying to be taken away by religious people such as the one in the cartoon. With the question at the bottom, the artist is posing a question to many conservative people that if gays have the feelings they do are their whole lives one big sin? The artist makes religion look intolerant of any other life-style but their own.

The “reality” that is constructed in this view is that with the overturn of Proposition 8, gays have finally acquired equal status to those of heterosexual marriages in some states, a beginning to progress in the gay marriage debate.
